We the Peoples... A Stronger UN for a Better World

The United Nations is an organisation that talks about different global issues and delegates representing different countries of the world cooperate to create resolutions with other delegates to help resolve these world issues. The UN is something that demonstrates the need to resolve world problems. The UN has 192 member states, and 5 which are permanently members of the security council. The UN has other branches that fight specific world issues. This organisation teaches us that human rights issues, environmental issues, and other issues are worth being fought against.

Some of the UN's branches include UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNICEF and UNODC. UNAIDS is organisation that is focused on preventing new HIV infections, discrimination against peoples with HIV/AIDS, and deaths from the infection. UNESCO is focused on education, sciences, and culture. They are trying to unite the world through knowledge. UNICEF is more focused towards children survival and gender equality. UNODOC in the other hand, is focused on the fight against illicit drugs.

Human rights issues is important to be fought against as it is one thing that we humans must have. Some countries in the world, such as ones that are currently in civil war, or have dictator leaders, are being denied The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The United Nations are trying to make sure the basic human rights are being granted to each and every individual. They have created the Millennium Development Goals and are trying to reach all of it by 2015, 3 years from now. Individuals should be able to live with their rights, as every living being has the rights to live freely and as they wish.

Environmental issues is also something worth fighting against. The environment provides us with everything; energy resources, foods, places to live in, water, and much more. The UN organisation, UNEP, is focused towards fighting for the environment. They are focused on inspiring, informing, and leading peoples and countries to fight for the environment. They enable peoples to improve their quality of life without destroying those of the future generations, in other words, without destroying the environment.

Without the United Nations, the world would be a very different place. For instance, the number of deaths from HIV/AIDS would be much higher, some countries will have no way of accessing clean water, and international cooperation would be much harder. We may not even have the rights we have now. We have a lot of things because of the UN. The United Nations have made their impact in the world. They've improved the living standards for a lot of peoples, and helped the world become a better place.

P.E. Climbing/Belaying Unit

For this P.E. Unit, we had climbing.  My best climb was the chimney. I almost got to the top. I think in this unit, I improved my collaboration skills as I worked with quite a lot of different people to belay. I think that my belaying skills has gotten better as now I am able to let the people I am belaying come down the wall smoother. My climbing skills didn't really improve though. I also think that my communication skills improved because when I was belaying, I had to be able to tell the people I'm belaying where to go when they are stuck on the wall.

Just the Way You Are

In today's world, the population have certain expectations that they think they are meant to exceed. This is all thanks to the media, magazines and advertisements. Females especially get affected by this, as a lot of advertisements today feature the "perfect" model of females. They are skinny, they've got perfect skin, they've got long legs, perfect hair, and the right looks. This can make girls, like myself, feel very conscious of our appearances. Fortunately, there are a lot of organisations out there that want to help girls feel better about themselves, such as Confidence Coalition. Their cause is trying to make girls feel more confident about themselves. You can sign their pledge here. I think that self-confidence is worth fighting for.

Some other organisations that are trying to make girl, or guys, feel better about themselves is TWLOHA(To Write Love on Her Arms). It is an organisation that brings awareness to depression, suicide, and the people feeling unloved. Doing this can show the people that are depressed, feel unloved, and the ones considering suicide that a lot of people care about them. How do you exactly show this? You write "love" on your arms. Another organisation that is trying to help girls feel better about themselves is Operation Beautiful. It has a lot of participants, and all the participants have to do is just post a sticky-note in a random place where a lot of people can find it and it has to say something about the reader being beautiful. 

Self-confidence is also worth fighting for because if people are more confident, then less people on this earth will feel worthless and think of what we are able to achieve! Seventeen Magazine is also doing something that is called "The Body Peace Treaty". It is a treaty that states that you are not to judge others by looks, you are not to let anyone influence how you feel about yourself, and several others alike. There is a saying that in order to be loved, you  need to love yourself first, and I think that it is true. Personally, when a person is really shy and not confident, I sort of feel awkward and I won't know what to say and if the person is confident, I tend to feel more comfortable.

Without these organisations, I think that the world would be really different. For instance, I think that more girls might have eating disorders and that not a lot of girls would be as confident. Saying this, I do not support arrogance, I support confidence. I think that these organisations are really inspirational because they all probably started from experience, and that can show people that they are not alone. You are beautiful, just the way you are(:

The Rainbow Warriors

Greenpeace is an organisation that is trying to create and energy revolution, defend our oceans, protect the world’s ancient forests, create a toxic free future, and campaigning for sustainable agriculture. It encourages us to consider fighting for the environment by taking huge risks, such as their activists risking their lives and getting thrown into jail, which can inspire people, such as myself, to also fight for the environment. Environment, I believe, is something that is worth fighting for.

The environment is worth fighting for because it is one of the things that we pass on to future generations and if we destroy it now, then what will the coming generations have? Our environment is what provides us shelter, food, and water. These are the 3 main things that we humans are not able to live without. Greenpeace is fighting for the environment so that we leave enough resources for our future generations, and maybe the coming generations will be greener than we are and they can rebuild what we tore down. Greenpeace can inspire people and they can be the impetus of change to the environmental world. Greenpeace has stood up to Mattel for using paper packaging that comes from rainforests in Indonesia, coming from a company that is leading in deforestation in Indonesia and destroying the habitats of Sumatran tigers, and has made the company stop using paper packaging from Asia Pulp & Paper (APP). This can cause other companies that use packaging from rainforests to change their ways and go for a greener way to use their packaging.

If we do not fight for the environment, then we will destroy the habitats of other species, which will then affect their population. Humans need other species to live because we depend on each other to survive. Our environment houses all of our food sources, which we are abusing by using techniques that are not sustainable, such as and blast fishing and drift netting. This is a part of defending our oceans, as the creatures that live in the ocean contribute to cleaning the ecosystem and every species has a right to live. Greenpeace has peacefully protested against Princes, one of the leading brands in seafood, as they used destructive fishing methods that accidentally catch fish that we have no use for and would probably just throw it back in the ocean. Some consumers (like me) refuse to use products that are not green, so if other companies decide to go green, they can pick up more customers.

We might not be able to keep a sustainable way of living without organizations such as Greenpeace because we humans have grown greedy and it seems as if some of us do not care about the environment and animals. Greenpeace is inspirational because it all started with a dozen people who wanted to change the world and they are now supported by millions of people worldwide. One idea can make a large impact in our Earth.

Paths

As we sit in class,

Education is our guide,

This showcases what I think is worth fighting fighting for as this poem is all about education. It is about how some kids do not have the rights to education and we are one of the lucky few that can afford to have good education and have a wider choice in life. Education is important to fight about as it is what enables us to have a wider choice of what we can do in life, stated in the poem. The last line is not the strongest in the poem, but it brings out a clear message that education is something that is really worth fighting for, as the future of humanity depends on it.

Out of Dark Comes Light: Raden Ajeng Kartini

Raden Ajeng Kartini was born to a wealthy and powerful Javanese family, when Java was still ruled by the Dutch Colonies. She was allowed education until she was 12, when she is eventually secluded at home and is prepared for marriage. During school, Kartini learnt how to speak fluent Dutch, which allowed her to acquire some pen pals in Europe, whom she wrote her desire to improve the living conditions of indigenous women, who had very low social status. She also read a lot of books, all were in Dutch during her life. It was from books that caused her to desire the improvements for women's living conditions.

At age 24, Kartini married Raden Adipati Joyodinigrat, the Regecy Chief of Rembang against her wishes, but she married him (already with three wives) because she does not wish to disappoint her father. He [Joyodingrat] allowed her to establish schools for women, as women were not allowed education in that times.

Kartini died on September 17th, 1904. Just a few days after her only son was born. She was only 25.

After her death, her letters to her friends were published with the title "Out of the Dark Comes Light (Door Duisternis tot Licht)" and the English version called "Letters of a Javanese Princess". In her letters, she protested the way that the Javanese culture does not let women develop, she wants women to develop and learn. She also doubted religion, and how the Qur'an must be memorized even if you do not understand it. She wrote "Religion must guard us against committing sins, but more often, sins are committed in the name of religion".

Kartini may not have brought change directly herself, but by her husband building the school for women, they have raised the living standards for women, as they are now educated and are able to get a job. Kartini's dreams are what caused change, as reaching Utopia require little baby steps.

Education: The Key to Developing a Country

Utopia: an imaginary place or state of things where everything is perfect.

My Utopia would be a place where everyone has the rights to at least 5 years of education. Why 5 years? Because in elementary school, you learn all the basic things you will need to get a job. You learn to read, write, do simple mathematics and also you learn social skills as you go to school. You may also learn English at school, and this is important because if you learn English, you are able to communicate with most of the others.

Reading and writing are basic knowledges that is needed to be able to get a job. 28.7% of the population in Niger is literate. Being literate is important as if you are unable to read, you will not be able to understand what certain jobs need in their employees. Writing is also important because, as I know it, you will need a description of yourself, and you will need writing for that.

Some jobs only accept people who have been educated for 5+ years. This is also another reason why everyone must receive education. So they are able to get jobs and fund their families. This may also help with the economic issues. School is also important because the schools may teach things about the environment and tell the students how to conserve our planet.

If there is no education in countries, they might not go forward, such as Ethiopia, which is an LEDC, while Finland is an MEDC, and it is caused by the fact that most people get education there. If there is no education, the country will not be able to develop.

Education is relevant for a person to be successful. Education empowers a person to become a leader. Great opportunities are presented to professionals. The future of a Person can be unpredictable if she lacks education; an uneducated person does not have the knowledge of what the future has to offer for her. Education is an essential tool to make a pleasant and stable living out of a simple quotidian life. High Education contributes to the increase of the graduate in her social economic level. Education is the main Factor for one to become wealthy, Millionaire, or even Multimillionaire. Education offers the opportunity for a person to become the owner of a mansion. Education brings one the opportunity to please herself. Perhaps, getting to travel often to interesting countries/places, or to be the owner of the latest new brand sport car. Education enables one to reach success. Education makes one become influential. Education gives one the opportunity to be at the top with the highest wage. Education gives one self-fulfillment. A thief can take away money, a car, a property from a person. but is definitely impossible to take education away from someone. Education is worth $10,000 $50,000 $1,000,000 One puts it value! Education is certainly the main Element to become successful and overall to reach one’s goals and dreams.

Kristallnacht- The Night of Crystals

Kristallnacht- the night of crystals. This tragic event happened on November 9th 1938. The day of the death of Vom Rath, assassinated by a Jewish Youth in Paris, which triggered the event. The Nazis were furious and started a riot. They destroyed Jew-owned business and burnt down 267 Synagogues, but only smashed Synagogues that were near non-Jew owned business. The Germans did not want to stand up, because if they did, they will get in trouble with the Nazis and will get sent to concentration camps. The Nazis made the Jews pay for the damages, which cost 1 billion mark. They were forced to give up possessions. 30,000 men were put into concentration camps, but the Nazis did not have a plan for mass murder of the Jews. Most of the Jewish people left wanted to leave the country, but the US only takes in 15,000 Jews/year and Canada only takes in 100s/year. The Jews were not able to immigrate because they refused to leave their families. Most of the Jewish population of Germany found refuge in Great Britain, which took large amounts of Jewish people in.

Propaganda: information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group,movement, institution, or nation. In Hitler's case, it's to Harm the Jews. Hitler started to brainwash people from a very young age, which started in kindergarten. The Antagonist of picture books were always Jewish people. They put in bad images of Jewish people everywhere. Hitler's Youth was a big part of his "Final Solution", he seduced children, particularly young boys, to go to his Youth Programs. Children as young as 10 would get in to the academies and would be given military training. Violence was highly recommended by the leaders. Some of the injuries were fatal, but they just said that German boys don't cry.

I think that Kristallnacht isn't really fair because the Jewish, who were the victims, were forced to pay for the damage that was targeted at them. Just because one Jewish man assassinated the diplomat, that does not mean that all Jews are the same. I also think that Hitler is trying to create "The Perfect Race" because he does not like difference. I think that what Hitler is trying to reach is like "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, in which the people of the city has absolutely no difference. Everyone was the same. I also think that Hitler is using the children in the youth so that they can go to war and wipe out an entire race.

I. am. the. Artist.

Last week, Mr. Whiting and Mrs. Narsiman helped the students in our humanities class determine their learning profile. A learning profile is based on whether you are gestalt or logic, and your dominant eye, ear, hand, and leg. My profile is an I.

When I am learning, I learn best through movement and by focusing on the whole picture. I need to be able to doodle on my notebook or somewhere. I tend to get distracted very, very easily and I need to feel a subject's emotional elements to learn it well. When learning, I need pictures because I am a visual learner and I can remember things easier when there are pictures involved.

I need to be able to doodle while learning. I don't necessarily need to move a lot, and just making small movements help me. I am a Visual and Auditory learner, which means I do well with pictures and listening. I am a Gestalt, which means that I don't like instructions at all and like to imagine my end results (although sometimes the end results are not what I expected). When I speak, I need to be relaxed so that the details can be communicated more efficiently. When I am under stress, my communication and movement is limited. The parts I am able to access while at stress are my arm and leg.

The strategies that would help me is to draw pictures, because I am a Visual learner, I am also an Auditory, but I work well with most teacher's teaching style. When I am under stress, writing/drawing with my non-dominant hand, walking, and Tai Chi can help me while I am at stress. Cross laterals are also useful. Soccer can also help, but I am not a very active person, and tend to stay indoors.

My teachers should know that when I am not looking at the speaker, I am still listening to them, and when I doodle, it helps me on my work and it makes me do my best. I think that sitting in the middle of the class might help me because I am able to access all my dominant parts. Pictures also tend to help me more, but words work equally as well.

Being under House Arrest is better than being in Prison: Aung San Suu Kyi

Why is Aung San Suu Kyi a hero? I personally think that she is a very important one because she is trying to free the people of Burma from the junta. She gives away her freedom so she can fight for justice in her country. I remembered back in 1st/2nd grade, I had a scenario exactly like it is in Burma. This one girl in my whole class got mad at me and then she got everyone to be on her side.
She kept it like that for a few weeks, I was all alone with only one friend to keep me company. I watched as all the bystanders kept it that way, which was really hard. So eventually, I told the teacher and things got back to normal, except that the girl was still mad at me.I think that it is important for others to speak up for injustice because if left alone, it could become a worldwide problem.

Little things that you do can impact somebody's life. Werther it is positively or negatively.

The story of Jesus Colon can occur in anyone's daily life. Jesus came home late from work, and he saw a woman-a white one- holding a big luggage with 3 small children, one is a baby. Colon's Negro side told him that he shouldn't do it because it was the time period when all the blacks and whites are separated in the United States. But his Puerto Rican side told him to help her because it is the right thing to do. Alas, he followed his Negro instincts and ignored the white woman. He feels horrible afterwards. This is a connection to Jason van Genderen's "Mankind is no Island" because in the video, van Genderen said to not walk away from people that need help, but Colon just walked away from the woman that really needs help.

I think that this poem relates to Jesus Colon because instead of breaking the racism in his time period, he just ignores the lady so he doesn't get in trouble. "Do we clobber it to death?" wrote Berry. This line really stood out to me because it reminds me of Hitler. Differences make us who we are and nobody has a right to change that. When I was little, I used to think that everyone in the world lived all happy together, but that was back when I was naive. While growing up, I learnt that not everyone is connected. But I think that that's the way to live. Hand in hand.

This poem is the exact opposite of "The Island" by Armin Greder. This poem tells you that everyone is connected to each other in some ways, while "The Island" shows that the people of the island can't accept the little man for who he is. Donne wrote "any man's death diminishes me this line shows that even if it was a stranger that dies, it may affect you in some ways and in "The Island", the little man's arrival affected all the people by scaring them, they all told lies about the man and used him to scare children. "No man is an island, entire of itself every man is a piece of the continent, apart of the main" wrote Donne, this line really stands out to me because it's saying that it's not possible to survive on your own, while the people of the Island is completely isolating themselves from all the other people. They built a tall wall around the Island so that NOBODY ever gets in or out of the Island. They shot all the seagulls because sometimes, people on boats follow them, and the people of the Island want to be separated from the rest of the world.

I think that the whole message of the video is listen to others, maybe they have an interesting story to share, and to be humane and not ignore all the homeless people on the streets, and just listen to them. The film shows how the 2 cities (New York and Sydney) are joined together by hope and hunger. "I walk by you today, I always look away" describes most of the people that were in the video. The homeless people are just there, sitting, while the luckier people just look away and not help. I have personally experiences this on the weekend. I was in the Great Eastern mall and there was a stand in front of Cold Storage. It was a deaf art stand. I found it really pretty, but didn't tell my parents that I wanted one.The whole trip home felt like a guilt trip. Not helping others makes me have this feeling in my stomach that won't go away for a few hours. Van Genderen took pictures of the words that make up the sentence showing negative things, and that if you show that you care, you might make the person's day, giving them hope, and sort of telling them that someone cares. It also says that nobody's different from each other. Everyone thinks like we do, sure, we might look different, think of the different things, and speak differently, but we're all human. Lending a hand can make a difference to somebody's life.

Four letter words story

The cat. That wild cat that was once mine. The damn car that hit her. He won't care. All I can do now is bury my cat. I miss her. He won't say sorry or even buy me a new cat. But a new cat is not the same. Not the same meow or even the same blue eyes. My cat, Beth, she was one of a kind. Her meow was like music. Her purr like a song of dark. The big blue eyes that stare at me as if I was a work of art and she was the artist.

I wrote this story for a writing exercise with John Marsden, an author from Australia that visited us.

Lady Gaga's Not-So-Famous Make-up artist/ stylist/ photographer?

I know what you're thinking.
I bet that you're thinking, 'What's with the title,  why Lady Gaga, and what's with the picture?'
Well, you can probably find the answers when you read on, and if you don't read on, you won't find the answers and if you e-mail me asking for the answer, I'm not going to answer you.

1) My Ripped Jeans= I love these jeans because they are "in style" right now. I have an obsession for fashion, I read the fashion magazines like Vogue or Marie Claire and plus, these jeans hug my curves although they are 3 sizes too big (I wear size 27, these are size 30). They also moves the attention from my torso to my toned legs. I bought them at Forever 21 last year. I don’t always wear them because they slide down my hips a lot, and apparently, people find it inappropriate to wear these because there are too many rips. I had to beg my mom to let me buy these jeans and I bought it in Pavilion.



2) My Anarchy Converse= As you can tell, Converse is my favorite shoe brand. I currently have 4 pairs, but I outgrew 1 so I'm going to ask for a new pair, Metallica this time. Metallica is the first band that played metal music and they're a legend. I have an  AC/DC one, a black one with pipe prints (the one I outgrew), my Anarchy one, and one with the paint marks and Grace's (My best friend that moved) signature on it. I don’t usually wear the one with Grace’s signature because I don’t want it to fade away. We were playing truth or dare on my iPod Touch after Batik last year, and it said "Let someone write something on the sole of your feet" but I was wearing my converse and was too lazy to take it off.



3) My Thomas Sabo Necklace= I'm not sure if you can see it, but I have my Thomas Sabo necklace there, the one with the Eiffel Tower chain and the ISKL one. This is my BFF necklace, I gave one to Grace, Diksha, and Sophie. This necklace is important because it makes me think of Grace and she is best friend. We promised each other that we're going to meet each other someday in Paris. Grace and I had planned to make a salon, her as the hairstylist and me as the Make-up artist. I got the idea for the saloon when we were fooling around at Grace's house and she was doing my hair, and I was doing her make-up. That was the best memory I had with her.



4) Lady Gaga Album= Lady Gaga is my hero, I love her music. I find that some of her clothes are very bizarre, while some of them are really pretty. I love how she is so creative, and doesn't care about what other people say about her. I find her confidence very inspirational. I’ve read articles where fashion critics judge her by saying “Her clothes are too crazy” but I admire her because she never changed no matter what the critics said about her. She is also my hero because she dares to be unique and takes risks to be creative.



5) My Digital camera= This item is important because I love photography, and to take the picture above, I used my Canon one. My Canon one is EOS 550, I think it's 18 or more mega-pixels. This camera is Shock & Waterproof so I can usually bring it down to the pool or to sleepovers, it is important because I took some of the best memories with this camera. The other orange one is 12 mega-pixels and I really love it because it has all these modes that are so cool, like the speed shutter, it’s where you press on the take picture button for a long time and the results will be like about 20 pictures, depending on now long you press it for, when you scan through it, it moves as if it were a video. I got my Canon camera this summer and the Lumix one last year.



6) My Twilight book= I chose this item because I'm a big twilight freak. I am on Team Jacob because I believe that love comes from friendship, instead of love at first sight. My favorite book from the series is Breaking Dawn and I'm planning to watch Vampires Suck next week. I started reading them during the summer of 2009 and got addicted. It took me only 1 week to finish the series! Last year, I planned to see New Moon with Wai Yan, but my mom got sick so I had to cancel the plans. This Summer, I went to see Eclipse with 2 of my cousins. The movie I plan to see on the 28th is called Vampires Suck, it’s a hilarious parody of the Twilight Series.



7) My 'Wateva' doodle-pad= I think that this item is important because it is like my sketchbook, but instead of being huge, it is pocket size so I can bring it anywhere. It has most of my best sketches I have done in YEARS. It’s also handy because I can just scribble notes here. It also is important because I bring it to every class and whenever I get bored, I just doodle in it. It also helps me let my feelings out by drawing things, whenever I’m sad I don’t usually let my feelings out and wear a fake smile. I let my feelings out in my room , I lock my door, keep my windows closed and turn the lights off, this helps me because I don’t want people to see me cry and this connects to my doodle-pad because it's where I express my feelings.



8) Seventeen magazine= I find this magazine important because it has fashion, make-up, and guy tips. It also has inspiring stories and hilarious traumaramas (embarrassing moments). This magazine is also great because it has the do’s and don’ts for fashion, like what type of clothes are great for your body shape and what’s not so great. It also has what’s in and how to be creative with make-up. It also has great work-out tips and how to get great hair and skin. There is also coupons and free gifts but I can’t get it because I always get the US one.



9) My Mascara= I think that this mascara is important because I really want to be a make-up artist, but I think that it'll be my second career because I want to be a lawyer too. I have other make-up products but I find this one most important because I use it daily and it makes my very thin lashes appear thicker and longer, this one is by Maybelline, but the one I want is by MAC because it's the brand that most make-up artists use.



10) My flat iron= I love having straight hair. I use this flat iron whenever I go out, I don't use it to school because my hair dryer is broken and it take a few hours for my hair to dry. I also love these because they leave my hair smooth & flat for the whole day. My natural hair is wavy and very poofy, which is kind of annoying, but they are pretty tame. I have 3 different shampoos and conditioners. I use my sunsilk shampoo when I use my flat iron.



11) My iPod Touch= I find this item  important because it is filled with all my favorite songs and it has pictures of Grace & I. Most of my songs are rock and heavy metal.
My favorite band is Slipknot and my favorite song by them is ; Before I Forget and my current favorite song is “Hey There, Delilah” by The Plain White T’s because it would be amazing to have a boyfriend write a song like that for me because that would be so romantic. I am also in love with the song "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance, because the mood really changes throughout the song.
